Romania detects Russian drone in its airspace after Poland

According to Romania, a Russian drone traversed Romanian airspace. This is the second country within NATO to report such an incursion.

In the defence ministry statement, Romanian fighter jets were monitored over the activity of Russian attacks in Ukraine on Saturday and tracked a drone near the southern border of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thought the incursion could never be a mistake, but “an obvious expansion of the war by Russia”. Moscow has not yet said anything about Romanian charges.

Poland said Wednesday that it had shot down three or more Russian drones entering its airspace.

At the occasion issued a statement from the ministry of defence, saying that the Russian drone was detected when two F-16 jets were shadowing the border of that country with Ukraine, after “Russian air attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure on the Danube”.

The drone was detected 20 km south-west (12.4 miles) from the village of Chilia Veche before it disappeared from the radar.

However, it did not fly over any populated areas or pose an imminent threat, the ministry added.

On Saturday, Poland reacted to worries with regard to Russian drones.

“Preventative operations of aviation – Polish and allied – have begun in our airspace,” said Prime Minister Donald Tusk in an X post.

“Ground-based air defence systems have reached the highest state of readiness.”

Earlier in the week the Russian defence ministry commented on there being “no plans” on targeting facilities on Polish soil.

Belarusian authorities, a staunch ally of Russia, said the drones crossing over Polish airspace on Wednesday were unintended after their navigation systems were jammed.

On Sunday, the Czech Republic announced it had sent a special operations helicopter unit to Poland.

The unit comprises three Mi-171S helicopters capable of carrying 24 personnel and equipped with full combat gear.

“This is in response to Russia’s incursion into the eastern flank of NATO,” said the Defence Minister Jana Cernochova.

According to President Zelensky, “the Russian military knows exactly where their drones are headed and how long they can operate in the air” concerning the drone incursion.

He has always urged Western nations to escalate sanctions on Moscow.

After the attack this week on our airspace, President Trump addressed the issue, stating that he is ready to impose sanctions on Russia “much tougher than what he’s done” if certain conditions are met by NATO members, for example, stopping buying Russian oil.

Russia launched the invasion of Ukraine in full scales in February 2022 and, since then, has been making very slow progress in the battlefield.

In trying to negotiate the ending of the war, Trump has become increasingly active since its resumption following a summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska last month; the end of which, however, was marked by intensification of Russian targeting of Ukraine.
