Modi urges Indians to cut of US ties

In his address to the public on Sunday, Mr. Narendra Modi asked the populace to refrain from foreign-making and rather buy local products, so to speak, for the self-reliant campaign that has blossomed with US trade relations going sour.

After President Donald Trump’s reciprocation of a 50% tariff on Indian imports, Modi has been advocating for using Swadeshi, or India-made products. His supporters have been conducting campaigns of boycott against American brands like McDonald’s (MCD.N), opens new tab, Pepsi (PEP.O), opens new tab, and Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab, all very popular in India.

“A lot of products we use daily are foreign made, we just don’t know … we have to do away with them,” Modi, in his address to the nation on Sunday evening on the eve of implementation of wide consumer tax reductions.
“Let us buy products made in India,” he added without specifying any particular country.
With a population of 1.4 billion, India stands as a great consumer of American consumer goods. More often than not, these are purchased from Amazon.com . American brands have reached deeper and deeper into smaller towns.
He asked shopkeepers to sell made-in-India products so that they may be an engine for growth for the country.
